I'm well aware I have neglected this blog. I am a terrible blog-mother. Very sorry indeed.

Anyway, I have had somewhat good reason. Katie Burrett (.com) has had a very intense and amazing Summer! I've been lucky enough to do things like see Friendly Fires at Mallorca Rocks with my wonderful boyfriend, and work at Creamfields with team Mixmag... also have worked at a brilliant local festival called Brownstock... seen Snoop Dogg and De La Soul in Victoria Park... interned for Front Magazine... Met Diplo... There is just too much to put here! If I've had 3 days off to myself it has been very RARE... I'm not complaining though, I'm lucky to be so busy doing what I love. But there goes my justification of my lack of blogging. If I've been in the house, I've been editing or catching up on sleep. Possibly dying my hair.

My new website, which is being made by me (sort of), will be up in a few weeks. It will feature my recent foray into music photography, something I see being a big part of my future! And also some streetstyle work I've been doing with Armani Exchange recently.

So in conclusion - I'm not dead, and exciting stuff is coming! Bear with me...

Took some snaps and pondered the art, I think RYCA is going in a much better direction with the glass and metal creations in the style of pub signs, which is his background! They really need to be seen up close to appreciate the quality, and it's so surreal to see giant symbols in such high quality materials. I must say I love the new watermelon print too, a lot more refined and in keeping with his style. I even pimped my phone with one of the stickers! Made an effort with my nails too in honour of the show, blue pink and orange! (apologies for the iPhone photo...)

Mishka Autumn/Winter (Behind the Scenes)

On Tuesday I conducted some exciting interviews for Mixmag, shadowing a Mishka shoot for the Autumn/Winter lookbook. It was shot by Steve Glashier (brilliant video director and photog) with a tiny team led by Laurence, with me shooting behind-the-scenes images. Very exciting to find out he directed Kila Kela "Built Like An Amplifier" (one of my faves) and Juliette and the Licks "Hot Kiss". Also got some very good advice from him!

Anyway, during the course of the day I was lucky enough to speak to Redlight (DJ Clipz), Peigh, Alix Perez, Subscape and Rod Azlan, who I chatted to in depth about Chatham, the people in it and how his vision of it is -"it's like Brick Lane but with no money"! He is actually from the Medway area himself, so it was interesting to talk to someone so successful doing what he loves about the town and what it holds for us creative types!

I have transcribed the interviews (I did this on the tube while laughing to myself about how I had to record Redlight's again in high speed voices because we didn't press record first time and Rod talking about chips!) but I won't put them up yet until they're all sorted and finalised with Mixmag, as there are two more to come!

Here is one of the images, only sharing it so early just because they used the amazing David Walker's artwork as the background for the shot of Subscape and Rod Azlan! I sincerely hope they use that for the lookbook, would be great coverage. I'll post links to the Mixmag site when all the stuff is up!

Had a very interesting week staying with the boyfriend, as his birthday came up and he's done basically EVERYTHING in his twenty eight years... so I booked The London Bridge Experience in the morning last minute... (Some interviews I had planned for Mixmag were cancelled the evening before...)

Now, the initial tour with the history of London Bridge is really good with great actors that really set the scene, and kinda freak you out as they're so into it. They're also really funny, kinda Bill bailey style... Nick and I couldn't stop laughing. Our team leader was a twelve year old in a fleece (!) that wasn't scared of ANYTHING. I was a bit annoyed at this because I was so freaked out it was unreal, screaming at everything. However, he has ruined his own fun because what was the point of him being there?! Along with quite a few people who answered the actors with "er... I don't speak English..."

Then they take you to The London Tombs... which you shouldn't do if you have a heart condition or asthma, but Nick decided to forgo his asthmatic condition to join in (as his isn't very serious anyway...) Apparently the tour works wonders for bringing on labour if you're pregnant and overdue... but bear in mind your kid will be born into evil!

This is honestly the scariest thing I've ever done in my life, I don't cope well with being scared (I will easily not sleep for days) with my worst film being "The Ring". I don't really want to spoil it for anyone but if you are anything like me, and could really do without placing yourself in that actual situation... you will love it! Because the adrenaline is amazing, saving me time and money on expensive/dangerous thrill seeking activities like sky diving... seriously, you have to go! Book the early/late bird deal on Ticketmaster and pay 11 quid each. Lovely. Although you walk out onto the streets of London at 12pm and feel like you're in 28 Days Later... every carton dropped by a delivery man made me jump out of my skin, so much so that I had to go sit by the river to chill out. No images sadly, as they are forbidden! But ultimately this is good because you need to go experience the sights, sounds and smells...

Last week I visited the Oxo Tower on the Southbank to see an exhibition of Fashion Promotion third years' work... I did some photography for Blane Chapman's final portfolio, and also his final project which was a publication called Alt.

Also spotted some work by the very talented Laura Crouch which I shot months ago... excuse the plastic glare! Plastic + lights + camera = chaos!

Also exciting this week, I was given a print by the amazing David Walker, his work is a must-see. Beautiful portraits of women in constructed with spray paint, no brushes! I helped out with the artwork capture for David's release of new prints through Squarity, which have been created into some of the best digital artwork prints I've seen. (I don't recommend flattening one out with sunbed cream, candles and water bottles, though!)

Very proud of my 1/50 edition! It's going straight up on the wall as soon as I can get a frame.

This post is not merely a homage to my friend Daniel, who takes turns to take me out to dinner and I him (we used to really like Chimichangas but it's changed drastically...)

He is currently applying for internships... He studies Fashion Atelier (fancy) and so he asked me to do some portfolio shots to send along. Apparently all the big fashion houses need to see images now. His work is really good so I wanted to do it justice. We were afforded just one afternoon and a University corridor. I did a few detail layouts... at first we shot on a white background with flash, it looked too fake so we went for sunlight (at 5pm!) and did some nice working backgrounds. Makes it a bit more active I think.

I love this dress... we spent some time in Bluewater looking for climbing rope for this, God knows where he found it in the end, can't wait to see it finished.

This jacket can be short or long... so clever.

Last night we went to see my total idol, Katy Perry herself... not the usual sort of "gig" I guess but whatevs, I loved it! There's something about watching acts like her and Usher (a few weeks ago), the production and actual show are amazing. But BF was having none of it, and proclaimed Katy Perry needs to put on a show whereas The Vaccines can hold their own with their songs. Which may be true for them, but it is a totally different ball game I think.

The first thing we noticed at the venue was the smell in the air, not the usual gig one of sweat and beers, but of kinda cherry candyfloss. Makes sense since a limited run of her album were released with a candyfloss scent! Never experienced this at a gig or "concert" before but it really gave it an edge... well as edgy as candyfloss smell can get!

I love her singing and music anyway but I absolutely loved the fact she did a medley of other artists songs (Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Willow Smith and JAY Z - Big Pimpin'... so legendary) and changed her outfits and the theme of the set more times than I can even remember.

The laser show during ET was out of this world (boom) and the mass gingerbread man dancers at the end were hilarious... I am definitely in love with this woman.

She did at least four outfit changes during "Hot n Cold", some of them just walking through a metre wide curtain... I really don't understand how she managed it! But every single one was amazing, especially the Peacock and the glitter cape. I also couldn't believe she was only at Hammersmith Apollo with a show like that, but I think the production ensured next time she will be at the o2 or something!

Interviews, Venison & Soap Vases

As usual, the event I am writing about was a few weeks ago because I am slightly behind at the moment! Maybe it was even last week... I don't know, I've lost track of the concept of time!

Basically, Blane Chapman over at Chav in Skinny Jeans was conducting an interview with the crazily multi-talented Ollie Olanipekun, and I popped along for the day to photograph it and generally hang out/eat Mcdonalds/meet up with Georgie.

I spotted a lovely t-shirt shop with the nerdiest photography t-shirts, might have to pop back and get one! Hasselblad please!

The interview took place at The Old Blue Last, and when I told my Dad about this on the phone, he was going on about how in the old days it was good and how his Girlfriend used to hang out there a lot. Apparently there was a guy who used to play piano there... so that's interesting... my only experience of it was extremely wasted, but I noticed how lovely it was in the daytime this time around! I took some photos of the surroundings:

During the actual interview bit, I was dotting around trying to get the best images possible with a 50mm fixed lens (feeling a bit like the worst paparazzo ever/an unrelenting stalker), totally got in some guys way and then he ended up moving to the other side of the pub... I think the images came out very well regardless! To hear/see the actual interview of Ollie's exploits of a very successful guy moving from Coventry to London, you're gonna have to wait until Blane decides to publish it!

We then met Georgie and took ourselves over to McDonalds like the classy people we are, then met my old friend Elliot at the gallery Haunch of Venison, where he is working.

You will be SHOCKED when I tell you that all of those figures (aside from the painting obviously) were made of SOAP. I kid you not. The Korean artist Meekyoung Shin has recreated sculptures and classical Chinese porcelain. In soap. It's all about dislocation and translation, heightened by some vases being presented on the crates they are shipped over in, clearly marked "Korea".

Large Format & Flash Workshop

A few weeks ago we had a really interesting sign up workshop with our tutor Jonathan. We used Wista and Bronica to try and balance ambient light with fill in flash. It was a really cool experience, and we found out some of the places were Jonathan has worked, which was just crazy and made me panic ever so slightly. Think British Vogue, Paolo Roversi... gah!

I learnt a LOT about balancing light and changing apertures to accommodate for extra light. Taking 4 light-meter readings on a scene etc. All very handy! I'd like to start shooting on film more. For my upcoming project I am shooting interiors and portraits on large format (it's probably my favourite to shoot on... just a little long winded and expensive).

Like a prodigal ~~son~~ daughter! Fuck you Wordpress, you're too difficult to balance my Usher-loving with. Even the mobile app didn't help my plight. I'll admit it's good, but it makes it into too much of a "thing". Blogging for me was so much more effective when I could quickly update on something I'd done. So for now, it's Blogspot, and Tumblr for all the iphone screengrabs of gigs and street style I should be shooting on the regs.

What has changed since I last posted? Weeellllll...

I put on the exhibition I posted about with my group, went down a treat! So many visitors and yummy sponsorship from Vitamin Water
My boyfriend has acquired a PS3, as much as I love it and C.O.D Black Ops, I am now usually shunned on a weeknight
I've managed to swing a Summer placement at Front Magazine...! Also covering street-style at Lovebox, V and Creamfields for Mixmag (really excited about this), as well as the upcoming Kitsuné x Ponystep party at Heaven on Easter Sunday. What a way to spend it...
My wonderful friend Georgina is assisting me in obtaining some Doc Martens, these specifically, I think they will do nicely for stomping around Essex/wandering around fests... maybe pick up some Hunters too! Now that I have silly long hair I also want a floppy hat.

I have decided to continue my studies in third year whilst commuting from home. It's close to Stratford, which has a direct high speed train to Uni, so I will save a fortune. I'm travelling so much at the mo anyway it makes sense...
Probably loads of other stuff I will update as and when, my poor brain isn't functioning today!

Japanese brand Ambush collaborates with Cassette Playa to create pendants, bracelets, brooches and more.

Really love this collection and think it works brilliantly, anything Casette Playa touches is usually gold anyway but this is on another level!

The collection will be released early next year and I got hold of the lookbook while at Mixmag, which shows pieces mixed with complementary clothing that really show it off.

Working for Mixmag

So this month, all my widest dreams came true and I was given a placement at Mixmag HQ in Islington. It was definitely the best placement I've ever done, and I rediscovered my secret love of writing.

The best bit being, this month I will be published! (I actually squealed in the office when I found this out...) I have suggested my top five nights out for December to January so please check it out! and researched "fun facts" and witty quips on each night, they probably aren't very funny but I got wikipedia madness pretty quickly...

I have also been contributing online at Mixmag Fashion and here is a not so flattering post featuring me giving it my all in a tomato fight...

Here we are at Golden Square in Soho, after running for the bus and onto the tube, running to Soho, getting fully kitted out and then having 15 minutes free to comprehend what we had signed up for... I wondered if everyone who had stayed at the office had infact had the right idea, but we ended up having a great time! Tomatoes are harder than I thought though...

Other stuff I did included clearing out a mammoth shelf (which made me quite legendary), scanned a lot of magazine covers, researched fashion topics, did fashion returns to PR companies and more... will have to have a proper think! These two weeks have gone so fast, I've moved back to the delightful Chatham (where 'Coppers' is based) and even though I'm enjoying my first lazy day in ages, I'm missing work being work and evenings, or what is left of them, being free to go to exhibitions, restaurants and the like!

I left on a high at 'That Mixmag Thing' at The Queen of Hoxton on Friday night, which was so good and had all the free Agua I could shake a stick at, but made handling a camera more and more difficult. I will upload some photos when I start editing.

I will be carrying on writing for Mixmag Fashion and taking snaps, waiting on my Mixmag ID to come through... exciting stuff!

ANDY WILLSHER: NME PHOTOGRAPHER

Continuing on mine and my flatmate Kevin's adventures (I do mention him quite a bit), Thursday night held for us a night of great importance... we attended the private view of Andy Willsher at The Hoxton Book Club. Lovely venue, really lovely guy! His work really held it's own because of the monochrome theme, his prints are currently on sale via his site and I lusted after a beautiful massive photograph of Amy Winehouse. Can see it going perfectly in my little bedroom!

I managed to get an interview with some juicy goss about Amy Winehouse and others... to be uploaded as soon as I get the mp3 from the dictaphone... The venue itself is lovely. Really original and raw, the lighting is not as focused on the work as I would like but then it's not always possible in a used space! Myself, Kevin and a few others are currently putting an exhibition on in a similar venue so it was great research, and was talking to the lovely Freya at TBC about how they set up.

PRESENTING WORK

Thinking about how to present my work for the upcoming exhibition... I have mostly been inspired by a Rankin exhibition I interned at that had the most gorgeous giant lightboxes with fashion images... and erm...

Although because our idea is of discord, and my images will be "otherworldly", I'm currently thinking of having the room dimly light and the viewer has to approach the lightbox to turn it on... and therefore is extremely close and just immersed in the image...

With A4 being £60 and A3 wall mountable £100, (and my "dream" of having a set of three square,) I may have to rely on electrician/lighting boyfriend for help making some!

Also, with every search I conduct I am more and more intrigued by the idea of S.A.D. lightboxes... do I need one? Have I got S.A.D.?! Is that why I'm so down about the dark? And the people in the adverts just look so damn happy...

I am the one with the awful grey hoodie... (edit: there was a lot of grey hoodie going on that week, your guess is as good as mine. Although I am sporting a fetching leopard print jumper that has since been relegated to pyjama wear...) In all honesty I did have loads of fun and I didn't think my course could get more challenging than say, recreating an entire film scene... designing and producing an exhibition is definitely more so.

Planning an Exhibition

This is indeed what I am doing... must be crazy. It'll be called DIS.CORD. Holding it in an abandoned church or disused beauty salon coz we're cool, I'm working with 4 great other artists in the realm of fashion and conceptual photography, will be uploading the press release ASAP.

In other news I am going to see Darwin Deez on Friday with my favourite Doc Martens Georgie... Hoping to get a few snaps...

What else... I am going to be shooting mostly on medium format from now, got a shoot to do with Nik Elder again on digital though... andddd need to arrange a work placement for December... must get on that today! Been checking up on loads of names and places, Le Book rocks...

I have recently been following the series of videos Palladium are making, exploring hidden, forgotten and abandoned places in urban environments. It is called "explorations"...

The famous boots brand have pulled out all the stops with groundbreaking coverage of new and, more importantly, relevant stories for young people. Very interesting! This issue follows Johnny Knoxville.

Today, the young people of the Motor City are making it their own DIY paradise where rules are second to passion and creativity. It seems to be a hub for new business because of the increased freedom and being a lot cheaper than centres like New York. They are creating the new Detroit on their own terms, against real adversity. It is so inspiring to see what can be done when the youth come together to try and build on what future generations once had. It's really worth watching!

A great new band discovered on the grapevine, their new single Toothache (free to download here) is a fresh new take on indie, away from all the kooks-style mellow guitars and whiney singing, more like a chilled Kasabian with a dance edge. Very much my sort of thing! Can see big things for them, especially after their UK tour and playing KOKO in November. Can't wait to catch them live and review it! Also worth a listen is the moody "white light passenger" which I have just fallen in love with! Definitely one for fans of Massive Attack, it weirdly manages to be unsettling and calming at the same time.....

I was very lucky to be given a ticket to this show at the Shepherd's Bush O2 Empire, I haven't been into the band that long but they certainly delivered! Opening with their more well known stuff like Undercover Martyn and continuining with singles and more stuff from Tourist History, throwing in a new song too. Ending with I Can Talk, and a stream of red and white confetti. I also loved the fact that the lead singer looks just like my house mate Kev. The atmosphere was good, not as mainstream yet as I would have expected which was lovely, support from WE HAVE BAND was good but so not what I expected! The Two Door Cinema Club lunchboxes for sale were awesome, which would have come in especially handy as I gave mine away yesterday... Just an excuse to go see them again! x

was insane! I had an opportunity to do some fashion work out there but what with one thing and another, I ended up just going for a lovely holiday at Ibiza Rocks without my dear old camera. Strange that I felt pretty selfish about going away for a break but there you go! I went in July this year, just after going to Marbella, should have definitely rearranged those two breaks. I had a major relaxing week in a private villa and then a crazy week of no sleep in a hostel and then fully fledged party hotel. I also gained myself a wonderful Ibiza boy who is definitely here for keeps!

I'm a bit wary of putting the wasted ones out there (sure they will come back to haunt me) but we captured some great moments and some good celebs haha, so here is the clean edition.

We hit up everywhere, made the most of it and had definitely one of the best weeks of my year (although there were several wicked ones...) I think if you see in the year in a good way, it influences the rest. I was wasted at The Old Blue Last... so who knows!

Kopparberg Klash: Style

I've known about this competition that Vice is running for a while now, they also have a photography sector and I've been wondering what kinda thing to enter (hard hitting large format adoption themed or canon shot shallow fashion?!) and in the mean time, stylist Blane has only gone and got to the semi finals with a shoot we did together!

In the run up to the final event (a live style-off at the London Fields pub, sponsored by Kopparberg with F R E E cider) Vice fans are visiting the event page and voting for their fave by "liking" it. Sweet Dreams DJs will be there and also free on-site alterations and jumble sale. The overall winner will be taking home £1,000 prize money as well as styling a photo shoot for Viceland.com and coverage in the Kopparberg Klash editorial in VICE magazine. Fingers crossed! The Creator's Project: Mark Ronson

I have 7 giant laundry bags and three suitcases to unpack, just to er repack again (!) so naturally I am procrastinating big time. I seem to have got myself lost in this website, http://www.thecreatorsproject.com/ . A partnership between Intel and Vice, The Creators Project is described as a network dedicated to the celebration of creativity and culture across media, and around the world.

This video of Mark Ronson is one of my faves; Not only because he is hot stuff, but it's really interesting to get an insight into the way he produces music, the way he puts it all together and considers EVERYTHING in terms of technology and sound. Love the way he considers the music industry and the technology of blogging and how it is affecting it. It's something I often think about, is blogging about your work a help or hindrance? It's almost as if people are becoming more accessible and less of the rock star enigma that they once were, but at the same time, how hard will it be to get noticed when everyone else is doing it and you're not out there?

The whole Creators Project website is worth a look, as is their events page, because they have some stuff coming up in NY and London. Oh how I wish that the NY one was in September!! The Impossible Project (literally!)

For my new project, Sequence & Series, I decided to do a play on Nick Knight's series of subcultures for i-D mag in the 80s. Having moved from Essex to Kent and having recently been a bridesmaid at a massive Essex wedding, I decided to base my subculture on the stereotype of the Essex girl, and how different it can be from surrounding Kent or London.

I decided to shoot it on something a bit different, so after my lovely flatmate bought me a Polaroid camera from Budapest in Easter break, I decided to get some of the new PX silver shade film from the Photographers' Gallery. I was after that kind of grainy black and white texture, and although I was well aware that using Polaroid might make it a bit more unfocused and generally less documentary style, I still thought it would be cool. So in between travelling from Rochester and back and forth to Central London, I stopped off at my cousins house in Redbridge for her to model, and it turned out to be a very lovely weekend!

As it happens, the photographs didn't come out tooooo well at all, pretty annoying as the new Polaroid is about as expensive as large format colour film. I was told to develop it at 17-24 degrees which I tried (but it has been SO hot) and also covering it for 90 seconds after (for the last few I was doing 10 minutes!!). Probably should have stuck to trusty Ilford HP5 and my Chinon! Also worth noting though, as my flatmate said, it could be the camera itself. It was brand new, but I'm going to try the second pack in her previously tested polaroid camera so we shall see.

Slightly better after a reduced temperature and keeping dark after for longer, but still so different from original polaroids.

Anyway, seven artists have been commissioned to create a Pokémon inspired piece of artwork to celebrate Nintendo's newest Pokémon releases on the DS, and are holding an exhibition to showcase the works, from 25th - 31st March, at Blackall Studios.

Busy couple of weeks

We have our setbuild project at Uni, as well as a Sequence and Series project, Essay and Fashion project. All at once. WOW.

Myself and the setbuild group (my flatmates plus Charlie) have decided to do a still from Old Boy after considering The Fly (gross), Let the Right One In, Thirst and some others including kevin's contribution, a Beatles musical set in the Vietnam war (love you really Kev). I am yet to be sent this still so will post when I recieve it.

The Fashion project I have already mentioned, I am creating a new campaign for Tom Ford Eyewear and it has to be believable as the next campign. No pressure or anything... I also cannot wait to see A Single Man, if only there were somewhere around here showing it. I have to wait until next week to see it in the city! Very impressed that the main star of the ads Jon Kortajarena is in it, who I may or may not be a tiny bit in love with.

Also, he is quoted as saying "I am a hopeless romantic. I believe in that grand love which can change your life in five days. Maybe it is just because I´m too young, but I really hope to believe the same at the end of my days." Wow.

So this is a very quickly retouched (for colour) version of one of my shots from my shoot... I have planned to get one of Fran alone, one of my male model Geoff alone and a couple shot, but after showing them to my tutor I have decided to crop Geoff to make it more eyewear and less menswear. I need to spent sooo much time on these for the hair and everything eek! But should be cool once it's done. Still need to pick the final 3 shots!

In other news, I did a promo shoot for Three For a Girl styled by Lucy Emma Harris, all arranged by their lovely manager Tom. A few of them should be being illustrated over by the amazing Toby Triumph which is exciting. The contact sheets are being poured over at the moment so I will upload a few of these when they are done!

I have finished my book "Sally Murray"... that needs to be photographed and scanned and what have you for here... however I am bedridden, so I will focus on the new project for now.

It's basically Fashion and Advertising, and I need to create an ad for an existing brand, taking their current campaigns and history into account.

SO:

I narrowed it down to Burberry, as that's where my knowledge and photographic talent is best placed I think. I had models in mind, the clothing sorted, black and white straight portraits etc.

OR:

I was really liking the look of Tom Ford's campaigns, the AW 09 always caught my eye in magazines because to be honest I wanted to be the girl in the campaign and be with the guy! And then this season they've come out with a great continuation in the shape of Nicholas Hoult and an attractive blonde OTT topless model with the male chauvinistic theme of her combing his hair. It will be tricky to come up with something along the lines of this, and to work out the lighting and do it as well as Tom has been but this is the one I've decided to do!

Very exciting. I was up until 6am searching for models and what have you, will update when I can.

Staying at my Dad's for the holidays, leaving poor old Kevin alone in the flat to carry on his stint at Debenhams! Recent high points in his career have been suggesting alcohol as a present from a Muslim couple to their teenage daughter. Go on Kev!

I don't think that the fammo is totally loving me going to bed at 5am and waking at like 2pm (I stay up watching their telly in the absence of one in the flat back home), so I stayed up for 2 whole days trying to get myself to be tired at 12 like a normal person, and it didn't work and I was no more tired than before. Something is definitley uppp... it is nice being around family though, and the nice food cooked, proper fire etc. Although fires are a bit of a hassle, and coal is expensive man. For what it is.

So anyway, I thought while I am here cut off in the land of Leigh on Sea, I would get some work done.

The new project is really far away from the commercial fashion stuff. It's basically a study of my adoption notes and turning them into scenes from this alterior person's life, like as if nothing had changed and I had stayed there and retained the name "Sally Murray" (my original birth name).

I will detail it more as the project goes on, with the different aspects chosen for the shots. I'm shooting on large format using a horseman (crazy ass hard to set up camera, need to photograph it in action!) and Ilford 6x4, I have 25 shots but I'm aiming for ten finals so it shouldn't be a problem. I'm intending on making a presentation to go along with it to show my tutors... feeling a bit weird about it... since it will have so much personal stuff in, but now's the time I guess.

The thing will be called Tracing Memories - ironically "tracing" is the term for searching for biological parents. Will be a nice upbeat set I reckons!

Oh, and the final result will be a mock up book, so yeah, will be posting bits of this as and when it happens. So far I've planned out my process, booked a houseboat shoot (will explain later and 5th Jan) and dissected the adoption notes for things to use in my imagery, such as biological parents love of music...

I currently have a Kevin in my room swishing about on my computer chair and shouting random crap. We're both eating Ben and Jerrys that we drove to Asda specially for. I've had 2 hours sleep. My room is covered in washing, shoes, books and I have an unmade bed.

It is deadline day. DUN DUN DUN.

Three projects were due in at 12pm this afternoon. For once in my life, I actually finished to a good standard (I hope) prior to the deadline and didn't feel an impending sense of doom when handing it in. I did finish about 4 hours before the deadline though, it has to be said... If it carries on like this, I could be finished up to a DAY before the deadline by the time it gets to dissertation. I'd be happy with that.

I took time out of my busy schedule (...*cough*...) to assist Andrea Carter Bowman on Saturday. The shoot was styled by Rebecca Corbin Murray and was in a word, awesome! The whole team were so lovely and the shoot itself was amazing, I will never get over the fear of a model in those crazy Alexander McQueen shoe boots, swaying like a tree in the wind. I never even thought I'd see them in real life... but there they were! Love it!

Watching somebodies professional shoot process was so good, it gave me a ton of ideas and more insight into the real fashion industry. I've worked with a couple of photographers before but I really did get so much more out of this one, the way it came together and everybody's input etc! I did the backstage shots so I'll be pointing to them on Andrea's blog when they appear. We were at Direct Studios and as the shot shows, I was tied to my sketchbook in between outfit changes.

I had the opportunity to assist on an editorial with Luke Newman on Friday but sadly had to turn it down because of Uni work commitments i.e. the pinhole camera I made didn't want to work, and if it doesn't want to work then I fail the project.... ho hum. That'll teach me to bury my head in the sand when it all goes wrong.

In other news, I bought a Christmas tree from Asda for my halls room to feel a bit more festive. I put the lights on it today, it looks ace, even if I do say so myself.

The quality and clarity of these images are stunning, something I want to work towards in the future! (Obviously waaaay off for me...)

Sometimes I wish that fashion images came along with details of how the image was shot (format, lighting etc.) just so i could try it out and not just sit here perplexed, wondering how someone creates something that perfect... I suppose that's half the fun of studying photography, experimenting so much that you can instantly tell the different tools and techniques used from looking at the image. I envy those people that can! I think I am getting better already though, which is good!

I recently spent a shoot (which I will detail soon) trying to completely eradicate shadow from the white colorama, and it took me a good while before getting it even half right. The physical process of getting the right image was so much harder than the technical information I had gained on setting it all up, the tiniest angle and changing the Broncolour by like 0.5 can affect it a lot more than I imagined!

Doing these shoots is a massive learning curve, especially when someone styling it asks me for something I genuinely don't know how to achieve, so I have to see what i can get hold of to do it, how it could be done and then just "wing it". I've learnt so much in the past few weeks!

However; it should be noted that this is all just personal work and nothing towards my degree (!!!) so i am panicking slightly at spending so much time on side projects. In Uni I've been using pinhole, large format and making panoramas and i'll detail that all soon too. Citin!

Too many posts

too many many posts, I have a lecture in 6 and a half hours, very bad times.

There is always time to ramble on here though. I'm behind on my blogs but I can't do a full recount of a shoot or a show noooow so I will drivel on about some other stuff I want to get off my chest, so to speak...

I have a project coming up that's due in around January, and my self chosen subject is my adoption. Not sure how I feel about this one at the moment, but think it will be interesting to document here all the same! Hmm...

I ate a salmon fillet today, and I always feel really sick after eating salmon but I never ever learn... I don't think it helped that I had it with prosciutto pasta and stuffed it with pesto and garlic cream cheese... BLERGH! Still feel gross now! About 8 hours on!

I never usually sleep, I probably get 4 - 5 hours on a weeknight, but the past two nights of this weekend I have slept for 12 hours. I'm wondering if it's due to this new heavenly duvet, and whether I will indeed get up for this lecture. It's on Hilla Becher and something else, but I never knew that the Bechers used large format and that's why the lines are all vertical. I never thought about distortion on different formats before, but you learn something new every day!

Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to learn something or other, probably that I am not made to get up in the mornings. I really have to hand back in this Metz flash at uni tomorrow, because I think if I hand one more thing in late they will stop me completely! I think I've been in every day getting something or other recently, ranging from flashes to large format cameras, lightmeters, 5 x 4 neg sleeves, broncolour kits, light clamps and god only knows what else! I think the best time was the fibre optic lighting kit though, never even seen one before!

America's Next Top Model

I saw my first episode Thursday (my flatmate put it on while I was working in the kitchen) and I am HOOKED! Why have I never watched it before?! It is amazing, I love all the shoots and Tyra is hilarious. Sadly enough, we actually pick up some pretty good tips from it. Like smizing! I myself will never be able to smize, but I want my future models to do it!

I love this show but my flatmate had never seen it, so we watched two series in 3 days, hardly moving from the same spot, and having random episodes of ANTM in between. Then we tried to watch the third series and switched it off halfway through second episode... total crap. The first ones though, have sorted my new mantra for life.... "fuck it." I'm going to do everything I can, starting with getting an ebay account (the crappest thing on my list)... this is a necessity because I now can't even be arsed to walk to town to rummage in second hand shops. Why bother when I can hand pick them online?

To be honest I don't see me ever leaving the flat again. What a strange weekend this has been.

It was a really fun shoot, the models are a couple and so there was a great chemistry between them and no awkwardness. We changed locations a couple of times which broke it up a bit and it was hilarious moving all the stuff to the other house in view of all the cranky junkies!! Everything ran smoothly minus a light burning out and thus stopping the electricity in the whole basement, and a couple of trips during the running scenes! But all in all, very successful, even though the drinking started waay before the shoot, haha! 8 have to be selected out of these lot... not sure which will be chosen.

I haven't posted in a long time!

What's new?!

I've moved to Rochester in Kent. Consequently finishing at the exhibition. Started my degree, and to be honest am finding it very difficult. It's so different to being in London everyday, surrounded by real stuff and having to be professional and try and deal with the real world!

I'm all for having deadlines and briefs, it's the closest an education system is going to get to the real world isn't it, it's just that I am really not into the things we are getting to do.

For instance... the first project was called "First Sight", using black and white 35mm to document a new experience. I chose two ideas from my shortlist, ("the young folks" and "leaving London") of which I only printed from one set. My images were received well, even complimented, so I don't understand what it is that's made me so against the whole project?!

Another was "Brief Encounters", which was shooting on the street using medium format. I worked with a lovely girl called Amanda and we decided to scout Mothers as our subject matter. The last project was Internal Landscapes, I decided to shoot a miniature set depicting a drive in movie, as my original idea of railway model deer hadn't worked out (I couldn't find them within the space of a week!).

I think the dead set briefs are making me steer away, I mean my main interest is Fashion, of course this doesn't mean I can't try my hand at everything else, I think when people are saying "you HAVE to use this format" and "you HAVE to come up with this certain idea" it just takes it all away for me. Still I gave it my best shot, ended up liking each of the results, but still for me they won't touch on the happiness I get out of a good image of a pretty girl that I've shot.

Our next briefs are: to make a pinhole camera out of something interesting and shoot landscape, large format interiors, and a digital composite landscape. So basically, I am completely uninterested and have decided that as well as completing these, I'm going to start doing my own work on the sideline. This started with my friend Blane asking me to shoot his Fashion Promotion second year project, which I agreed to do, and now I have quite a few fashion shoots to be getting on with. Very pleased with this! Meeting with the stylists, trying to figure out their needs and equipment we should use is just so much closer to what I thought (and still think) i should be doing. I love collaborating, sure I can work on my own but everyone coming together to create something is just somehow so much better at the moment for me!

Blane's shoot is tomorrow and we are shooting "Vice magazine style". We had a bit of a brainstorm a few weeks ago and decided to shoot digital for the quick turnaround (his hand in is soon) and use a Bronica SQB for some black and white square shots, hoping to make them look as grimy and grainy as possible. The digitals will be edited in the same way, colour though, probably saturated a bit, lomograph style. Using one continuous light with reflector, a simple movable set up in the basement so we can capture the moments rather than have everything dead set. It has to look real and relaxed and casual, obviously at the same time has to be captured well and look great as editorial. I'm dead nervous, not sure why, I think it's the biggest shoot to date with two models, stylist, stylists assistant, myself and one or two assistants for me! Will post details tomorrow and behind the scenes.

Also have an ongoing project about Tracing Memory, I've decided to focus on my adoption and the material things I've got relating to it; whether or not they create memories or are proof of a memory or lost moment in time. I'm thinking this could either go really well and I'll feel at peace with it all and myself or I'll have a nervous breakdown and never shoot another thing! [/dramatic].

OK; I last blogged 6 days ago and it felt like yesterday....

I had visitors at work: this is a very exciting ocassion, one that I spent far too long mentioning to everyone in passing, how very cool I am! Bearing in mind I haven't seen these friends in months, it was very exciting. That and the hundreds of models arriving for a Nivea casting, escorting these gorgeous women through to the studio was fun but very embarassing for my face, particularly as not many had a scrap of make up on!

Back to the main story... we perused the Rankin Live exhibition (okay, Blane and Lucy did while I got changed in the toilet... classay) after a bit of cafe 1001 with Matt and Elliot, and then decided to eat some Sushi and Sandwiches.

Oxford street called for Topshop where I fell in l o v e with these shoes (blue), and I can't have them because I earn n a d a. Totally depressing.

On to LG Pout at Movida ("La Vida?") ~~which I will be adding pictures of as soon as I get them.~~ As well as being a Fashion networking event run by the lovely Miggy, it was also a release of the new LG crystal phone. It has a range of weird and wonderful features, I liked the originality of a perspex feature that also had touch capability. I just couldn't figure it out! At first I didn't get on with it (I've never been one for touch screen) but after a few tries it seemed fine. Definitely a fashion forward handset, which like my previous baby the Motorola Luxury Razr 2, has it's own special bluetooth headset (available separately). Cocktails and general merriment led to me and Luce feeling a bit squiffy, and having to leave for a train back to Rochester. Which we missed. But nevertheless we all did a bit of networking with people from D1 models and Channel 4 filmers etc... missed out on Hip Hop karaoke which sucks, and has to be done soon.

After not being in Rochester for a few months, going back was strange, but also felt like I had never left! Endless cups of tea, more Sushi, crisps and sofas were just what I needed after getting up at 7am and endless working... I was so pleased to see Lucy and everyone again, will be great to move back but I'm dreading her leaving, won't be the same! And not being as close to London.

I did not realise that my business card networking type things were ridiculously huge, they're only A5, actually smaller! Is this huge? Hmmmm.....

In other news, Spotify finally decided to work (hence me being up now, it's amazing!), I still have major edits to do for the girls and Nudge Records, and yet the pile of work never decreases. Also have to find someone to work for my Dad tomorrow after Rankin Live!!!

Myself and Lucy Emma Harris have decided to team up for some shoots as a stylist and photographer duo. More on this to follow. Also need to blog in detail my day in the studio Weds, Mark Cowpers' exhibition and bits and pieces of the Rankin retrospective.

Most tiring week ever...

I've been working like crazy, going to Rankin every day and then also doing a couple of shoots. No time for blogging and such, not even on my Blackberry on the train, but I've been trying to fit it in! Here's a couple of unedited previews anyway...

Thursday night I had a shoot with a girl called Abbie Day, using a MUA called Clare Bradshaw and it was a great success! We were going for a 60s look, taking full advantage of Abbie's lovely red hair and fringe, with a white straight up and down dress. The make up look was kinda grey eyes with black along the socket and BIG false eyelashes (of course!)

We started with a studio set up (including creased to buggery pop up interfit background) and then progressed to some casual daylight shots on the balcony, then using the lighting outside to give it an ethereal edge. I'm not sure if I liked these ones as much as the others, but the proof will be in the editing. The studio ones are out of this world though, I'm so happy, we achieved our goal of gaining some great beauty shots! I'm so pleased they're both close, it means I can set up some casual last minute stuff if I get a great idea.

Friday after work I had a shoot with Immaculata, an agency signed model from Kingston. The shoot was intended to be sort of Brick Lane Indie chick and I think it went veryyy well! We managed to leave our stuff upstairs at Rankin Live and then she got changed in Cafe 1001. Just randomly went around the area finding good locations, I love doing this! I decided to ask a record shop called Nudge on Hanbury street if we could do a couple of shots in there and it was fine, the only stipulation being that the guy wants the photos! So that's cool! We were under a bit of a time and memory card limit (oh dear!!!) but other than that it was fab, and both of us were happy!

I now just need to get ahead on editing these and other shoots around work, which is hard travelling to Southend to avoid National Rail's train strike too! BUT it's over, so hopefully I'll be able to get a lot more done. Woohoo. This is quite possibly the saddest thing I'll ever say, but I've gotten used to the c2c trains and stations. They're soooo much better, especially when you are the type of person that falls asleep on trains. They announce and have a lit sign on the train with the current station! None of that round these parts I'm afraid.

Just set up my blog... not quite sure about all this! I can't even keep up with Twitter. But apparently I have to set up a blog to "network" so here goes...

No work today, I felt ill (in a previously thought swine flu infested house, however we now know this isn't the case...) and was on the verge of a mental breakdown, I feel... I encountered a horrible train station man, amongst other things...

(Work is being a lowly intern at Rankin Live on Brick Lane.. I love it! Crazy hours though...)

Something photo related? I have 3 shoots planned next week, very excited although I'm not getting the time to plan owt for them. One is studio (as close to studio as a home lighting kit can get) and two are location in London. I'm thinking some sort of indie trendy Brick Lane vibe... VERRRYY original eh?
